The Fastest Cars Of 2017

2017 is the year of the ultimate Speed freak. Gone are the days when 200 mph was the holy grail of motoring. Today there are many cars which have breached this once impossible threshold. Indeed, some of the fastest cars of 2017 completely obliterate 200 mph. It seems 2017 has thrown up a new unreachable target, the lords of asphalt are now on a mission to create a mind boggling 300 mph, road legal car. Continue reading

The FIAT 500X – è stato bello

There’s something about Latin cars that brings on a little Italian flair to the writing even when, as in this case, under the skin they are a Jeep Renegade. The original FIAT 500 is now an object of automotive desire and the designers have done a great job with bringing the diminutive model into the 21st Century. What we didn’t know is that it would grow and grow. It grew into the 500L and then into the FIAT 500X Cross you see here. Continue reading

Killing Bambi & Other Distractions

Much is made these days of the distractions of modern driving. Smartphones in particular come in for a lot of criticism although to be fair it of course the users who commit the crime. Our modern cars are full of such attention-takers. Touchscreens, over-talkative passengers, infotainment centres all distract drivers from keeping their eyes on the road, often with unwanted, inevitable and sometimes tragic consequences. Audi TT: Still Great But Is It Too Sophisticated?

First launched in 1998 to the appreciation of a drooling public, the Audi TT Coupé continues to offer driver appeal, even in the current third generation model nearly twenty years on. Also available in roadster form, this icon of automotive sports car design boasts across the whole range the expected performance, but is it starting to lose that sports car edge? Continue reading

The State Of Our Roads

Ah yes, the state of our highways; a matter of long-standing, much discussed concern. Sadly, little progress seems to have been made because the condition and maintenance of Britain’s local roads continues to disappoint many UK drivers. Motoring Organisation the RAC have issued their Report on Motoring (HERE) which has found that 51% of road-users think local road conditions have worsened in the past year. Continue reading

Cycling vs Driving Lament: It’s Not Getting Better

As a motorist and car owner I am acutely aware of all the possible infractions that a driver can be had up in front of The Beak for. Also, traps abound: near to me, just around a blind corner, what appears to be a local urban road suddenly turns into a ‘bus only’ lane for a distance of about one hundred metres. The signage is low and often obscured by parked cars. Locals are aware of this piece of council vindictiveness but strangers are not. A couple of the good chaps who bring press vehicles to me, including the poor innocent who brought me the Ford Fiesta (here), have fallen foul recently. Continue reading

Ford Fiesta: Ahead Of The Race

Way, way back in the dark, coal-burning pre-internet days of the Twentieth Century when we purchased cars from local dealers or out of the newspaper small ads, the Ford Motor Company introduced a vehicle to get into the burgeoning small car market that followed the 1973 fuel crisis. It was revealed in 1975 as the Ford Fiesta and from 1976 began to sell like hot cakes. Many versions on, it still does. Continue reading
