2040: Yes, But Have They Thought It Through?

Following the government’s announcement that the sale of petrol and diesel cars must stop after 2040 a taxi driver was interviewed by some television Johnny. He was broadly in agreement with the idea but wondered how taxi drivers – for example – would manage given the EV range issue as it stands today. Continue reading

Suzuki Swift: Great Value Supermini

All versions of the good-looking Suzuki Swift tip the scales at well under 1000kg thus delivering a lively and fun driving experience from the available economic engines. I liked the previous model a lot and this new one improves on that across the board. The test car, in top-of-the-range SZ5 trim, came loaded with extras (see the full spec below) and still cost under £16k, making this supermini tremendous value. Continue reading

Are Young Drivers Ready For The Road After Their Test?

A recent survey asked 1,800 young and learner drivers, about the process of learning to drive. It highlighted some concerns. These worries are being addressed this very week which is designated Learner Driver Week to encourage positive change and make driving as accessible, valuable and affordable as possible. Audi A4: Pound For Pound Is This The Best Car Around?

That’s a fair question and I know what my answer would be. There are of course many Audi A4 variants. Audi do not miss a trick when it comes to offering something for everyone on every model. In this case the car on test is an A4 saloon with a 2.0L TFSI 248bhp (252PS) quattro S-tronic in S-Line trim. It has got the lot. If you check out the options list below I cannot frankly see anything I would like to add, except maybe Audi’s Virtual Cockpit which is the best thing since sliced bread. I would also like to specify a lower price. Continue reading

Subaru BRZ – Revised & Improved But No Faster, Alas

The Japanese manufacturer stubbornly refuses to acknowledge the customer desire for more speed from the Subaru BRZ, at least in the UK, although this great little sports car has been revised for 2017. The original was great, this latest version is even better but the downside is there is no more power. This car requires the driver to exercise proper driving skills so if you want cheap thrills go back to the loud n’ brash hot hatch market. That would be a mistake however because this stylish car rewards the effort with a fine madness of its own. Continue reading

About Irritating & Inconsequential Car Advertising

Manufacturer car advertising is always rich in hyperbole, we understand that; but there is a limit. When the latest advertisement for the new Renault JamJar comes on the television the background slurping noise that you may faintly hear in the distance is the sound of my heart sinking. We are asked to believe that this clearly wealthy, attractive yet divorcing couple will swing around in the road and go to their ‘beach house’ – which is in fact a bijou villa somewhere wonderful – for a bit of post-marital nookie. Continue reading

Jaguar XE R-Sport 2.0L Diesel – Business As Usual

There are Jaguars for work and there are Jaguars for play. In this case, here’s a car that is the business. The Jaguar XE featured here in R-Sport trim certainly looks the part; the looks are understated yet racy but that’s as far as the performance goes. You see, this model is a diesel and is not designed for high speed travel; it is designed for comfort with matching economy and on that score it certainly delivers. Continue reading
