The FIAT 500X – è stato bello

There’s something about Latin cars that brings on a little Italian flair to the writing even when, as in this case, under the skin they are a Jeep Renegade. The original FIAT 500 is now an object of automotive desire and the designers have done a great job with bringing the diminutive model into the 21st Century. What we didn’t know is that it would grow and grow. It grew into the 500L and then into the FIAT 500X Cross you see here. Continue reading

Peugeot 3008: Car Of The Year?

A while back I complained that many new crossovers and SUV’s all had the same look as if there was a template being passed from manufacturer to manufacturer. Whilst I hold to that to a certain extent I have to admit to being guilty of the sin of over-generalisation because some of the new crop of such cars are uniquely styled: The new Peugeot 3008 featured here is a case in point. Peugeot 2008 Update: The PureTech GT-Line

I reviewed the latest Peugeot 2008 last year, HERE. Then, it was a diesel-engine version in Allure trim. It was a fine modestly-sized SUV which I described as being an ideal small, economical family car. The 2008 is based on the 208 supermini but, although heavier, offers more versatility and space. This time I wanted to try the three-cylinder 1.2 PureTech petrol engine with a lively 130bhp and 230Nm of torque. Continue reading

The Demise Of Our Car Magazines

The other day a friend gifted me with two magazines dating from the 20th Century. One was a 1958 copy of The Motor, featuring the 1958 Motor Show from Earls Court; the other a 1972 copy of Motor that reported on that year’s Le Mans race when the motor racing world lost the great Jo Bonnier. Make The Right New Car Decision

Throughout the year motor manufacturers launch, it seems, a new car on almost a daily basis. The choice has never been so good. Soon the very latest vehicles will be beckoning to you alluringly from behind plate-glass showroom windows. Try me. Buy me. Continue reading

A Valediction For The Skoda Yeti

A while back I was watching The Grand Tour in which our merry trio were driving some expensive supercars and it occurred to me that I had, albeit briefly, myself driven two of the cars they were testing. Throughout the series other, maybe lesser cars, also made an appearance and it is with great pleasure that I found I had driven some of them too, often extensively and with a big cheesy grin on my face. Suzuki SX4 S-Cross: Friendly Persuasion

I don’t know if it’s just me (it usually is) but I always enjoy driving a Suzuki. The Japanese company seem to have found a way to inject friendliness into the DNA of their vehicles; that is the only way I can describe it. Suzuki cars are easy on the eye and easy to drive and put me in a good mood. Such is the case with today’s example, the crossover-like Suzuki SX4 S-Cross (in SZ-T trim), in this case with a lively 1.0L Boosterjet engine. Continue reading

Subaru Times Two

I may have mentioned before that I am partial to a Subaru. (A passing lady of my long-term acquaintance has just looked over my shoulder and said, “Only about a million times”, before moving on. A bit over-exaggerated I thought). The Subaru brand has traditionally been popular among a dedicated core of buyers. Marketing is targeted towards specific niches centered on those who want the company’s signature drive-train, in particular the outdoors enthusiast and affordable sports car markets. Continue reading

Audi SQ5 – The Perfect Family And Driver Compromise

With so many Audi variants you could picture herds of them sweeping majestically across the plain. Yet they are all different. Just like the part-performance car, part-family-ready SUV that is the Audi SQ5. It’s already a firm UK favourite on the strength of its impressively well-rounded appeal. From this week though, its all-new successor retakes its rightful place at the head of the Q5 range offering an even more concentrated dose of that successful formula. Continue reading

Nissan X-Trail – A Worthy SUV Contender

Nissan X-Trail is not a silly or meaningless name for a car – unlike some I could mention. It conjures up an image of the great outdoors and of rugged exploration. The thing is, like almost every other car in these lifestyle days, or so it seems to me, the Nissan is now softer in its approach to the SUV market. Continue reading
