Traffic Fury: Merge In Turn

Traffic Fury is intended as an irregular feature (that is to say it will appear often, sometimes or never again) whereby I take a single motoring complaint and have a furious moan about it whilst castigating the general driving standards of this nation’s car users. At this stage it is unlikely I will have have a feature called Traffic Joy, but we live in hope. Now read on about Merge In Turn: Continue reading

Killing Bambi & Other Distractions

Much is made these days of the distractions of modern driving. Smartphones in particular come in for a lot of criticism although to be fair it of course the users who commit the crime. Our modern cars are full of such attention-takers. Touchscreens, over-talkative passengers, infotainment centres all distract drivers from keeping their eyes on the road, often with unwanted, inevitable and sometimes tragic consequences. Continue reading

The State Of Our Roads

Ah yes, the state of our highways; a matter of long-standing, much discussed concern. Sadly, little progress seems to have been made because the condition and maintenance of Britain’s local roads continues to disappoint many UK drivers. Motoring Organisation the RAC have issued their Report on Motoring (HERE) which has found that 51% of road-users think local road conditions have worsened in the past year. Continue reading

Cycling vs Driving Lament: It’s Not Getting Better

As a motorist and car owner I am acutely aware of all the possible infractions that a driver can be had up in front of The Beak for. Also, traps abound: near to me, just around a blind corner, what appears to be a local urban road suddenly turns into a ‘bus only’ lane for a distance of about one hundred metres. The signage is low and often obscured by parked cars. Locals are aware of this piece of council vindictiveness but strangers are not. A couple of the good chaps who bring press vehicles to me, including the poor innocent who brought me the Ford Fiesta (here), have fallen foul recently. Continue reading

Back Seat Drivers & Other Road Menaces

Okay: You’re driving along a pleasing road in lovely weather with two or maybe three passengers on board and you feel that, in general, life is good. Everything is hunky-dory; until that is one person offers some advice and all of a sudden the sound that you hear is your own teeth grinding against each other. Continue reading

Driving Courteously Not Selfishly

Returning from the South Coast on the day after August Bank Holiday is always going to test the patience of a saint and I am not saintly. When a driver, in part at least, brings travel trouble upon himself, it is even worse; at least that’s my recent experience. I also found that the idea of driving courteously seems to be a thing of the past. Continue reading

Car Mechanics Less Popular Than Estate Agents Shock

A few days ago I wrote about an excellent independent garage that now attends to my personal transport and a jolly good job they do too. Main dealers are more expensive and can be intimidating places for people who are not versed in car knowledge. Now, although we live in a modern world ablaze with the white heat of cutting edge technology, some things seemingly never change. A survey has just offered the opinion that customers hate dealing with repair garages and car mechanics more than any other trade. Continue reading
