Hybrid Ford Mustang & A New Golden Age of Automobiles

Bill Crittenden of the Crittenden Automotive Library prefers the modern approach to the Ford Mustang: Bill writes from the  USA:   Technology seems to be encroaching upon the most fun and interesting aspects of owning and driving automobiles: automatic transmissions, electric cars, self-driving cars, cars bloated by safety features and fuel economy regulations strangling design creativity. There’s a constant barrage of technological advancements vying for our attention on the dashboard that are replacing the charms of “well-weathered leather, hot metal and oil” of the cars of years gone by. The Greening Of Britain

Apparently, at the C40 Conference of Mayors climate change knees-up held in Mexico City (And did you even know that there was a ‘conference of mayors’?), four of the world’s greatest cities – Paris, Madrid, Athens and Mexico City itself – have decided to ban diesel powered cars within the next decade. Expect this attitude to diesel to spread rapidly. No doubt Sadiq Khan will lay plans for London just as soon as he gets back from ‘fact-finding’ in sun-kissed Central America. Continue reading

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV – Premium Comfort

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) is the UK’s best-selling vehicle of its type. Mitsubishi reckon that the official fuel consumption figure is up to 156mpg but, to be frank, it would take a very special set of circumstances to achieve this. I certainly didn’t manage it but to be fair I was putting the test car through its paces. Continue reading

Peugeot 508 RXH – It’s Good But What Is It For?

I always applaud efforts by car makers to try something that moves at least part of their range out of the ‘mainstream’ even if it doesn’t always work out. The RCZ-R from the French manufacturer is a fine little sports car for example but is, alas being, deleted from the catalogue. That’s a shame and a sign of the times. The Peugeot 508 RXH is another example; it is the company’s effort to add a premium ‘all-roader’ model to the range but sadly it doesn’t quite come off. Continue reading

If Your Name Is Jones You Can Feel Superior.

EV, hybrid, low-emissionYou know surveys? These are things whereby an organisation allegedly asks people around the country certain questions and then bends and manipulates the resulting statistics to suit their aims. We see it all the time and yet I have never, ever been asked to undertake a survey (except by telephone cold callers) about anything. Well, here’s the latest thing: Continue reading

Is The World Endurance Championship The New F1?

Porsche, Le Mans, F1You may have picked on the the fact that I have been unwell for a few days suffering from some appalling man-ailment. As a consequence I haven’t been at the coalface producing stuff, rather I have been on the sick sofa having to endure some quality motorsport as Mrs DriveWrite ministered unto me in a nearly sympathetic manner. It was during one of the best Le Mans for years that I had an epiphany. Continue reading

Volkswagen Golf GTE – Hybrid Efficiency

Short road tests don’t deliver the chance to thoroughly evaluate cars but are usually a worthwhile exercise to form an opinion. Thanks then to Volkswagen for a grand day out recently which gave DriveWrite the opportunity to try some new and refreshed vehicles from the VW range. First up, it’s the Golf GTE. Continue reading

Range Rover Hybrid – As British As Fish & Chips

The sky was Alice Blue and the breeze was cold but the weak, wintry sun heralded a hint of warmer days to come. Thus the decision was made to drive to Weston-super-Mare for a stroll along the prom and to enjoy one of the finer things in life – fish and chips at Winston’s Fish Bar. As luck would have it we were able to make the journey inside our featured car, the Range Rover Hybrid pictured below, which, coincidentally, is also one of the finer things in life. Continue reading
