Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) has been a bane of motorists for almost as long as cars themselves. The Motor Car Act of 1903 required motorists to pay £1. Then a ‘road fund’ was established for the purpose of maintaining the roads but by 1937 the government of the time realised that this was a handy sum annually and absorbed it into general funds. The result is the system we have today and, as of April 1st, anyone buying a new car has to stump up VED. I reviewed the latest Peugeot 2008 last year, HERE. Then, it was a diesel-engine version in Allure trim. It was a fine modestly-sized SUV which I described as being an ideal small, economical family car. The 2008 is based on the 208 supermini but, although heavier, offers more versatility and space. Why writers & journalists have it easy today… In general, car manufacturers are very generous to motoring journalists and it is appreciated. Scribes and snappers are invited to events and launches, all, or at least most, expenses paid. Recently, I was asked to attend, with VIP status, a prestigious motor racing event, for example.
