The Laughing Policeman

Long ago, in the days when men wore proper hats and opened car doors for ladies, there were amusement arcades on the end of any seaside pier. There, amongst the crane machines that robbed you blind and the handle-cranked ‘What The Butler Saw’ Mutoscope reels with Edwardian ladies disporting in their dishabille much to the secret delight of coy youths with restless genitals, there was exhibited an automaton in the form of a ruddy-faced laughing policeman. There’s one in the clip below: see how jolly he is, laughing in gratitude for the gift of a penny in the slot. (Once you get the idea stop the clip; gets a bit irritating after a while). Speed Cameras – The Saga Continues

The following unsurprising story has recently been reported in the Daily Telegraph and probably elsewhere. Please note that I am not a Telegraph reader. I saw this on the internet. I want to be absolutely clear on this. A stout fellow called Thomas Baird was sent a court summons accusing him of speeding in a 30mph zone in Staffordshire where he was nabbed by a speed camera. Smoking, Choking Cars

Those amongst you who have been around for a very long time may well remember that there was once a brand of cigarettes called ‘Strand’. The advertisements had the strap-line, “You’re never alone with a Strand”. The standing joke was that total strangers would come up and try and mump a snout from you. Presumably if you happened to be in the City of Westminster, on the Strand, with a Strand, you may have been absolutely mobbed by people, possibly politicians. The Disgrace That Is Police Funding

It has recently been reported that many cowering residents of Frinton-on-Sea, a quiet and genteel seaside retirement town in Essex, have clubbed together to hire burly private security guards to patrol the streets. This is because, apparently, Essex police have had to drastically cut services because of ever present ‘funding cuts’ and can no longer afford the visible deterrent of bobbies on the beat.
