Traffic Fury: Let The Need For Speed Recede

In light of the recent tragedy of three lads killed at a bus stop it seems reasonable to look again at the issue of speed. At the time of writing this the facts about this accident are not clear but the words ‘high speed’ have been reported. On today’s busy roads in this troubled country, as much as it might go against the grain, the need for controlling some drivers’ baser instincts is clear. In the case of this appalling accident it seems that even speed cameras festooned like fairy lights along that road would not have made any difference because the car was driven by a runaway coward for whom the law would probably not be a consideration. Above me the skies darkened and it began to rain in sympathy and even the clouds seemed somehow sad. Continue reading

Same S**t Different Shovel: The War On Motorists

The word has come down from beyond Hadrian’s Wall that the Scottish police are to abandon the idea of being slightly lenient on speeding and are abandoning the ‘10% + 2mph’ guideline. They say it’s a trial but, as we all know, that’s just a euphemism for ‘you’re nicked’. From now on one mile per hour over the limit will see Scotland’s motorists on the wrong end of a fine. The War On Motorists Continues – And It’s Going Global.

The recent announcement from the motorist’s chum, our very own jovial Eric Pickles, about the curtailing of council persecution of drivers for monetary gain is good news. It is tempting to think that the war on motorists is, if not over, then in abeyance but sadly this is not so. Continue reading
