Citroen C3 Is A Real Surprise

This pleases me. I like a car that, whilst competing deep within the supermini sector, offers a little bit of flair and individuality that sets it apart. Such is the case with the Citroen C3 you see here, loaned to me in the top-specification Flair trim (see below). Admittedly I’m biased, being a fan of the brand and indeed a Citroen owner but this car has real merit in my opinion. Continue reading

Ford Fiesta: Ahead Of The Race

Way, way back in the dark, coal-burning pre-internet days of the Twentieth Century when we purchased cars from local dealers or out of the newspaper small ads, the Ford Motor Company introduced a vehicle to get into the burgeoning small car market that followed the 1973 fuel crisis. It was revealed in 1975 as the Ford Fiesta and from 1976 began to sell like hot cakes. Many versions on, it still does. Continue reading

New Nissan Micra: Super Supermini

Five generations of the Nissan Micra have shown the car to be a worthy, if dull, contender in the small car stakes. It sold very well and was sound and reliable and all that but couldn’t really shake of that fuddy-duddy image. That’s all changed now. Ignore the rather silly ‘accomplice’ TV ad and instead concentrate on the many good points of this very attractive car. Continue reading

Suzuki Swift: Great Value Supermini

All versions of the good-looking Suzuki Swift tip the scales at well under 1000kg thus delivering a lively and fun driving experience from the available economic engines. I liked the previous model a lot and this new one improves on that across the board. The test car, in top-of-the-range SZ5 trim, came loaded with extras (see the full spec below) and still cost under £16k, making this supermini tremendous value. Continue reading

The Audi A1 Is Just That.

I am of the firm belief that if you took all the variants of all the Audi cars on sale today and lined them up, they would girdle the earth; there’s that much choice from the German brand’s catalogue. At the start of the line observers will see the tiny Audi A1. According to a dictionary (Yup. Still using one), A1 means ‘Very good or well. Excellent’. If a ship is described as A1 it means it is equipped to the highest standard. The definition applies here. Continue reading

Hot Hatch Love Lost?

At the time of writing this I am driving a DS3 Performance. That’s it above. With its Parisian boulevardier looks and feisty engine it is the very epitome of a hot hatch. There’s much I like and some things I like not. I’ll write a pretty positive review soon; but there’s a problem. Continue reading

Alfa Romeo Mito & The Curate’s Egg

I must apologise for the state of the test car in my images, which is why I have also used AR media snaps. In my defence, the weather that week was appalling. You simply cannot keep a car clean in winter. That’s my excuse. Now, call me peculiar but I have a soft spot for Alfa Romeo cars of all ages. When, in due time, Gabriel and his air-horns call me to that great parking garage in the sky I know I will be given free entry to the petrolhead’s bar and the executive ‘restroom’ because, you see, I have personally owned two brilliant but flawed cars from the Italian manufacturer. Continue reading

Volkswagen Polo – A Match For Any Supermini

Whenever a prospective buyer considers a choice of supermini hatchbacks, the first thought is of the evergreen Fiesta and with very good reason. In fact, this segment of the car market is awash with decent small cars but, instead of the Ford, perhaps at the top of any short list should also be the Volkswagen Polo, voted the 2016 supermini of the year.. Continue reading
