Shattered Dream Or No Surprise?

If you are British and have half a brain you will know full well that, one way or another, we are right royally ripped off from all sides all of the time. For example, some while ago the Utilities were ordered by toothless paper tigers (or ‘watchdogs’ as they are known) to simplify their power tariffs. What they actually did was change them. Make them different. Continue reading

Volkswagen Polo GTI 3 Door – Short Drive Review

VW Polo GTiColin Hubbard has been at it again. The man’s insatiable. Here’s his latest excellent review: When I think of a small hot hatch the Clio 200, Fiesta ST, Corsa VXR and 208GTi instantly spring to mind. I find it rather strange that the Polo GTI, little brother to the fabulous Golf GTI, has always lived in its shadow and rarely gets a second look. Previous incarnations were a little tame, fine on paper with engines ranging from a 1.8L 20v turbo to a turbo and supercharged little 1.4L but overall they have lacked sparkle. Continue reading

The Last Days Of The Hot Hatch

Back in the dark, historic days of the Twentieth Century with its Three Day Week, ghastly New Romantics and Cadbury’s Smash, tourists were allowed to roam free around Stonehenge, touch the ancient monument and wonder…
Here, in the blighted present, seekers of history are kept well away from the stone circle (unless they are famous or political or Druids) and are herded through the now ubiquitous visitor’s centre before exiting through the gift shop. Continue reading

Volkswagen Golf GTE – Hybrid Efficiency

Short road tests don’t deliver the chance to thoroughly evaluate cars but are usually a worthwhile exercise to form an opinion. Thanks then to Volkswagen for a grand day out recently which gave DriveWrite the opportunity to try some new and refreshed vehicles from the VW range. First up, it’s the Golf GTE. Continue reading

Driving The Volkswagen Tiguan

The last couple of years we’ve experienced, by and large, reasonably mild winters with the odd cold snap thrown in. For the most part in the UK four-wheel drive is handy but probably unnecessary unless you venture off-road or live in the deepest countryside. Two-wheel drive and maybe some winter tyres will normally suffice for the majority. Continue reading

Dare To Be Different – The Volkswagen CC

On the morning that the Volkswagen CC was due to turn up I wasn’t exactly bubbling with excitement. I expected the car to be a dull motorway shuttle – so that’s me completely wrong again then. My week, in fact, was spent in a big comfortable car with a decent turn of performance and a sportier than expected drive. Continue reading

Volkswagen Golf Gets R-Line Spec

Order books are now open for the stylish Golf R-Line, ahead of first deliveries in March. Prices start from £24,190, rising to £26,765 for the range-topping 150PS TDI DSG version. DriveWrite can vouch for the R-Line specification having just said goodbye to an excellent VW CC R-Line and hello to a Volkswagen Tiguan similarly equipped. Continue reading
